FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CBS4) -A popular medication for impotence was banned by U. S. regulators, but a new study showed it could be used to treat other sexual disorders, including erectile dysfunction.

It found that the popular erectile dysfunction medication Viagra, which is sold by private prescription for $5.99 and available as a generic, can treat erectile dysfunction if it works. The FDA also recommended a drug called Cialis, which is also sold by private prescription for $6.99.

Viagra has been linked to more than 20 cases of impotence since it was introduced in 1998, including the deaths of men with diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and spinal cord injuries. The FDA said in a statement it was taking the latest study, which found the use of Viagra to treat impotence was associated with a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

In a news release, FDA spokeswoman Kate Travaglin said the agency “continually monitors and reviews all drug product liability reports” and is working with the FDA to ensure Viagra is safe and appropriate for use, but she didn’t provide any details on how the study might affect its conclusions.

According to the study, Viagra was prescribed to 20,000 patients between January 2013 and December 2017. The researchers found that Viagra caused the average age of patients to increase from 19 to 22, while Cialis did not.

The drug’s maker, Pfizer, is also working on a drug that can treat impotence, which is a condition where an erection lasts for four or five hours or more. It was originally intended to treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

Viagra is available as a generic version of Cialis, which is sold by prescription for $6.99. A generic version of Viagra is available for $8.99, and it can be purchased from pharmacies that are certified to sell prescriptions for the drug.

Patients and physicians should speak with their doctor to determine if Viagra is a suitable treatment for the patient and to discuss alternatives, including the use of a different drug, or other treatments for erectile dysfunction.

In the study, about 15,000 patients, over four years, were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or a pill with either 20 milligrams (mg) or 20 milligrams (mg) of Viagra. The pill, a generic version of Cialis, was taken before the start of sexual activity and lasted four to six hours.

Results showed that patients taking the pill had a lower chance of developing impotence, but had more positive erections when the drug was taken as well.

The findings came after the study was halted in August, which sparked a debate among doctors over whether taking a pill with Viagra could be considered a treatment for erectile dysfunction. The FDA said it would review the data and make recommendations about the use of Viagra and Cialis.

“The FDA has no interest in prescribing a pill with the same active ingredient that is used to treat impotence and should not prescribe a generic version of Viagra if it can be safely used to treat this condition," the FDA said in a statement.

According to the FDA, the study was designed to assess the effects of Viagra and the side effects that may occur when the drug is taken, and the study was funded by Pfizer.

Pfizer, which is also developing a drug called Cialis, is currently facing similar litigation in states that do not regulate the use of Viagra, such as Alabama.

The FDA has warned that it may soon begin advising patients about the potential risks of taking a pill with Viagra, which the company had previously rejected.
